The short answer: the right MagSafe phone holder for a laptop depends on one decision you make before any spec matters, whether the phone should live on the laptop or beside it. Attached to the lid keeps the phone at eye level and travels as part of the machine. A desk stand keeps the two separate but adds an object to pack. After that the specs that decide it are magnet grade, closed thickness, and whether the thing can grow into anything else.
- Thickness is the spec people skip and regret: a mount that folds to 5 mm lets the lid close normally. One that folds to 12 mm turns your laptop into a wedge.
- N52 is the grade to look for, and magnet count matters as much as grade: enough hold to survive typing vibration is a different problem from enough hold to carry a tablet.

What to look for
Magnet grade, and how many
N52 is the highest commercially common grade of neodymium magnet, and it is the number worth checking on a spec sheet. But grade alone does not tell you the hold: a mount with four N52 magnets and a mount with thirty behave very differently once you start typing and the laptop lid flexes.
Two different jobs hide behind the word "hold". Keeping a phone in place against keyboard vibration is easy. Keeping a tablet in place against gravity is not, and it is why the honest answer for tablets is two mounting points rather than a stronger single pad. Closed thickness, which decides whether you leave it on
This is the specification that quietly determines whether you actually use the thing. A mount you have to remove before closing the lid is a mount you will stop using by the second week.
The number to ask for is closed thickness, not open. Folding arm mounts commonly land between 8 and 12 mm folded, which is enough to stop a laptop shutting flush and enough to press against the screen. On the laptop or beside it

On a desk stand, the phone is separate, easier to pick up, and does not involve attaching anything to the machine. That is the right answer at a fixed desk where nothing moves, and for people who simply do not want a plate on their laptop.
Neither is better. They answer different questions, and if you work in both places you may genuinely want both.
Non-MagSafe devices
MagSafe is native on iPhone 12 and later. Everything else, meaning Android phones, older iPhones, and every tablet, attaches through a metal ring or disc that you stick to the device or its case. Check that the rings are included rather than sold separately, because that is where a cheap mount stops being cheap.
One practical detail that catches people out: a ring needs a flat surface. Cases with textured backs, raised patterns or fabric finishes are where magnetic mounting gets unreliable, regardless of brand.

If you want one system rather than three accessories
This is the case for a modular mount, and it is the only category where our own product is the obvious answer rather than one option among many, because it is the only one built as an ecosystem.

Watch out for: it is a mount, not a charger. On its own it holds the phone and nothing more. And it involves attaching a plate to your laptop, which is the real objection, addressed below.
If you just need a phone beside the screen, cheaply
The folding aluminium arm category does this job perfectly well. An adhesive base on the lid edge, a swivel arm, a magnetic ring in the box, usually under twenty dollars. If your requirement is "phone visible next to my laptop" and it will never become anything else, this is the rational purchase and we would rather you made it than overbought.
The trade-offs are consistent across the category: they fold to roughly 8 to 12 mm so the lid does not close flush, the adhesive is usually permanent rather than repositionable, and there is no upgrade path. When your workflow changes you buy another accessory rather than adding a module.
If you would rather not attach anything to your laptop
Then a foldable magnetic desk stand is your answer, and no amount of arguing about modularity changes that. Some people will not put a plate on a MacBook lid, which is a completely legitimate position and the main reason to choose a desk stand instead.
You get adjustable angles, easy switching between portrait and landscape, and nothing stuck to the machine. You give up eye-level placement beside the screen, and you carry one more item.
If the point is Continuity Camera
Worth knowing before you buy any mount for this: Continuity Camera has a placement requirement, not just a mounting one. Per Apple's own setup guide, the iPhone needs to be positioned near the Mac, in landscape orientation, stable, with the rear cameras facing you and unobstructed.
That rules out a lot of desk stands, which hold the phone in portrait at an angle meant for reading. What you need is a mount that holds landscape steadily at the top edge of the display. How to set it up without regretting the placement
- Clean the surface on the laptop lid and let it dry completely. Magnetic hold is only as good as the contact underneath it.
- Work out the position before committing. Open the laptop to your normal working angle, hold the phone where you want it, and check three things: that it does not cover the screen, that the lid still closes, and that the camera is not blocked if you plan to use Continuity Camera.
- Attach the plate or ring. For a MagSafe iPhone you may need nothing on the phone at all. For Android, older iPhones and tablets, the ring goes on the device or on the case, and the case back must be flat.
- Test before you trust it. Mount the phone, type normally for a minute, and tilt the lid through its full range. If it shifts under vibration, the contact patch is the problem, not the magnets.
- For a tablet, repeat on the second mounting point and space the two so the load sits between them rather than hanging off one.
Three workflows this actually unlocks

The honest limits
- Something has to attach to the laptop. This is the real objection and it is not ours to wave away. Reviewing the EDGE Pro system for 9to5Mac in May 2023, Fernando Silva called it "intuitive, elegant, easy to use, and most importantly, it does not break the bank with its pricing", and the one drawback he raised was exactly this: adhesive plates have to go on the MacBook, which some people will not accept, though they can be removed. If that is you, buy a desk stand.
- A mount is not a charger. Holding the phone and powering it are separate jobs, and the second one costs extra in every system including ours.
- Textured and fabric cases are unreliable with magnetic mounting. The ring needs a flat surface, on the phone or on the case.
- One pad will not hold a tablet. Two mounting points, or pick a different form factor.
- Magnets near a laptop are fine, but be sensible. Modern laptops and phones are unaffected. Old mechanical drives, hotel key cards and magnetic-stripe cards are a different matter, so do not park a card between the magnet and the lid.

FAQ
Will a magnetic mount damage my laptop?
No. Modern laptops use solid-state storage, which magnets do not affect, and the screen and keyboard are unaffected too. The thing to keep away is anything with a magnetic stripe: hotel key cards, older bank cards, and any legacy mechanical hard drive.
Will the lid still close with the mount attached?
That depends entirely on closed thickness, so check that number rather than the open one. Around 5 mm the lid closes normally. Folding arm mounts commonly sit at 8 to 12 mm folded, which stops a laptop shutting flush.
Does a MagSafe holder work with Android?
Yes, through a metal ring or disc stuck to the phone or its case. MagSafe is native only on iPhone 12 and later; everything else attaches through the included hardware. Check the rings come in the box.

Qué mirar
Grado de los imanes, y cuántos son
N52 es el grado más alto de imán de neodimio de uso común, y es el dato que conviene comprobar en una ficha. Pero el grado por sí solo no te dice la fuerza real: un soporte con cuatro imanes N52 y otro con treinta se comportan de forma muy distinta en cuanto empiezas a teclear y la tapa flexiona.
Detrás de la palabra "sujeción" hay dos trabajos distintos. Mantener un móvil quieto contra la vibración del teclado es fácil. Mantener una tablet quieta contra la gravedad no lo es, y por eso la respuesta honesta para tablets son dos puntos de sujeción y no una pastilla más fuerte. Grosor plegado, que decide si lo dejas puesto
Esta es la especificación que determina en silencio si acabarás usándolo. Un soporte que hay que quitar antes de cerrar la tapa es un soporte que dejarás de usar la segunda semana.
El número que hay que pedir es el grosor plegado, no el abierto. Comprueba que los anillos vengan incluidos y no se vendan aparte, porque ahí es donde un soporte barato deja de serlo.
Un detalle práctico que pilla a mucha gente: el anillo necesita una superficie plana. Las fundas con texturas, relieves o acabados textiles son donde la sujeción magnética se vuelve poco fiable, sea de la marca que sea.

Si tu necesidad es "ver el móvil al lado del portátil" y nunca será otra cosa, esa es la compra racional y preferimos que la hagas antes que comprar de más.

El móvil a la altura de los ojos junto a la pantalla hace que Slack, los avisos de calendario y los códigos de doble factor lleguen a tu campo visual en vez de quedar boca abajo junto al trackpad. Parece menor hasta que cuentas cuántas veces al día coges el móvil, lo desbloqueas y pierdes el hilo de lo que estabas haciendo.
El iPad como segunda pantalla. Sidecar más dos puntos de sujeción convierten una tablet que ya tienes en una pantalla de consulta o superficie de dibujo que viaja plana. Es el flujo que más justifica un sistema modular, porque los mismos Core que sujetan la tablet en el escritorio sujetan tu móvil en el coche el fin de semana.
Las limitaciones honestas
- Algo tiene que pegarse al portátil. Esta es la objeción real y no nos toca a nosotros quitarle importancia. Analizando el sistema EDGE Pro para 9to5Mac en mayo de 2023, Fernando Silva lo describió como "intuitivo, elegante, fácil de usar y, sobre todo, no arruina el bolsillo por su precio", y el único inconveniente que señaló fue exactamente este: hay que pegar placas adhesivas al MacBook, algo que algunas personas no aceptarán, aunque se pueden quitar. Si eres de esos, compra un soporte de mesa.
- Un soporte no es un cargador. Sujetar el móvil y alimentarlo son trabajos distintos, y el segundo cuesta aparte en todos los sistemas, incluido el nuestro.
- Las fundas texturizadas o de tela no son fiables con sujeción magnética. El anillo necesita una superficie plana, en el móvil o en la funda.
- Una sola pastilla no sostiene una tablet. Dos puntos de sujeción, o elige otro formato.
- Los imanes cerca de un portátil no son problema, pero usa la cabeza. Los portátiles y móviles modernos no se ven afectados. Las tarjetas de hotel, las de banda magnética y los viejos discos mecánicos son otra historia, así que no dejes una tarjeta entre el imán y la tapa.

Preguntas frecuentes
¿Un soporte magnético daña el portátil?
No. Los portátiles modernos usan almacenamiento de estado sólido, al que los imanes no afectan, y la pantalla y el teclado tampoco se ven afectados. Lo que hay que mantener lejos es cualquier cosa con banda magnética: tarjetas de hotel, tarjetas bancarias antiguas y discos duros mecánicos.
¿La tapa seguirá cerrando con el soporte puesto?
Depende enteramente del grosor plegado, así que comprueba ese dato y no el abierto. Alrededor de 5 mm la tapa cierra con normalidad. Los brazos plegables suelen quedar en 8 a 12 mm, lo que impide que el portátil cierre a ras.
¿Un soporte MagSafe funciona con Android?
Sí, mediante un anillo o disco metálico pegado al móvil o a la funda. MagSafe es nativo solo en iPhone 12 y posteriores; todo lo demás se sujeta con los accesorios incluidos. Comprueba que los anillos vengan en la caja.
¿Puedo usarlo con funda?
Sí, siempre que la parte trasera sea plana. Las fundas texturizadas, con relieve o de tela son donde la sujeción magnética se vuelve poco fiable. El anillo puede ir en la funda en lugar de en el móvil.
¿Cuánta fuerza magnética hace falta?
La suficiente para resistir la vibración del teclado, que casi cualquier soporte N52 consigue, y ese listón es más bajo que sostener una tablet. Para tablets la respuesta son dos puntos de sujeción, no uno más fuerte.
¿Qué soporte sirve para Continuity Camera?
Uno que sujete el iPhone en horizontal, cerca de la pantalla del Mac, estable y con las cámaras traseras despejadas. Apple documenta esas condiciones en su guía. Muchos soportes de mesa en vertical no las cumplen.
¿Puedo montar un iPad junto al MacBook para Sidecar?
Sí, con dos puntos de sujeción. El peso de una tablet es demasiado para una sola pastilla magnética del tamaño de un móvil. Comprar un kit con dos soportes suele salir más barato que comprar dos sueltos.
¿El adhesivo se puede quitar?
En el EDGE Pro Core el lado del portátil usa capas de nanosucción y se incluye un extractor de placa. El análisis de 9to5Mac señala que las placas se pueden quitar, y al mismo tiempo apunta que tener que pegarlas es el principal inconveniente para algunas personas.
¿La carga inalámbrica funciona a través del soporte?
A través del soporte no: un soporte sujeta, no alimenta. En un sistema modular el cargador es un módulo aparte que comparte la misma interfaz magnética, y por eso el EDGE Pro Wireless Charger es un producto distinto de $39.90 y no una función del Core.
¿En la tapa o en la mesa, cuál elijo?
En la tapa si trabajas en sitios que no eliges tú y quieres el móvil a la altura de los ojos sin ocupar mesa. En la mesa si trabajas en un escritorio fijo o sencillamente no quieres nada pegado al portátil. Las dos son válidas, y mucha gente acaba teniendo ambas.
¿Un sistema modular ahorra dinero de verdad?
Solo si ibas a comprar las otras piezas de todos modos. Un soporte y nada más sale más barato como accesorio de uso único. El ahorro aparece en la segunda y tercera compra, cuando un módulo se acopla en lugar de llegar como otro objeto suelto.
¿Qué tamaño de tablet aguanta?
Publicamos el requisito de dos Core en lugar de un tamaño máximo de pantalla, porque en la práctica el límite es el peso y el equilibrio, no las pulgadas. Separa los dos puntos de sujeción para que la carga quede entre ellos.
